Kolo Slavuj - Kolo mi je

 Croatian dances from Burgenland, Austria

Kolo Slavuj is the leading folk ensemble of the Burgenland Croats.

The group has been in existence since 1971. Its members, who now number almost 60 currently active male and female dancers and musicians, come from various Croatian localities of Burgenland, Slovakia and Vienna.

With the help of recognized ethnologists and ethnic choreographers from Croatia, Kolo Slavuj explores Croatian dance, song and customs. On the basis of research material, six choreographies have been created which present Croatian dances, songs and customs to the public in the form of adaptations for the stage. In addition, in its repertoire the ensemble has four more choreographies with dances and songs from Croatia.

Fiddle music from Romanian Moldova

Performed by: Aurél Mandache & Kárpátia Orchestra

"Moldva is the Hungarian name of a territory east of the Carpathians, where a Hungarian speaking ethnic group, the Csángó people live. Their musical heritage is a rare treasure, kept alive by merely a handful of musicians. This album itroduces the repertory of an exeptionally virtuouso Gypsy musician from Moldva, fiddle player Aurel Mandache (1933, Gîsteni), who became a professional musician at the age of 20 and has lived on playing music and farming since then.
The 70-years-old musician played for the Csángó people in wedding parties, baptisms and on other important occasions, as well as for 16 years in the Band of Bacau (capital of Moldva), where he played with the famous band leader Ion Dragoi and toured many countries including the Netherland, Belgium, Turkey and India. On this CD he is accompanied by the members of Kárpátia Band, a promising group of young musicians from Budapest. The recording took place in a professional studio, the accompanying musicians were instructed by Mandache himself, but their musical rendering represents the style of the younger generation of folk musicians in Hungary. The recorded material may be divided thematically into three parts: traditional Csángó melodies (1–14), Balkan type melodies (15–17), and popular Sirba and Hora melodies (18–23)."
